My First Blog Entry
Hello, my name is Brandon Burkett, and I have been asked by my school to keep up a Weblog. I don’t think it is a bad idea, I think it is A great idea, I just have no real clue as to how to get started.
To start off, I can explain my position within society at the moment. I am currently a student enrolled at BCIT’s Digital Animation program. I am learning how to become a valued member within the Industry, the only problem I face at this moment is that I have no idea of what I want to do. Digital Animation branches off into so many different applications (Storyboarding, Modeling, Texturing, Animation, Exec..) and I have no idea which one to choose. I am still only starting the second semester, and our teachers say that we need not worry about it so much until we start third semester. BUT they also say that we need to start thinking about our Final Demo Reels now. which in some way, slightly contradicts itself. Because in order to have a clear thought about what you want to do for your demo reel, you have to have a clear idea of what profession you wish to pursue.
I find myself slightly leaning towards Animation and Storyboarding right now, mostly because I enjoy them both. more so over Modeling which I find slightly harder than the other aspects of the coarse. Modeling to me, consists more on your artistic skill (not that I am saying that they all don’t draw on a persons artistic side, just that modeling is more so than the others). And when your artistic skill isn’t as proficient as it could be (In comparison to my fellow classmates) then you find yourself working harder than others to improve. I enjoy a challenge, I often find myself working happily away in the lab, when the maid walks in and starts to vacuum, I see that as A sign that I have been their for long enough. But sometimes, I find that others peoples work that is better than mine, Is a boast, which forces me to do better.
I have found my time so far at BCIT very productive, not only leaning the essential skills that will help me in future endeavors but the time spent here has helped me improve my Problem solving skills and my Teamwork skills. Which I find at this moment to be one of the most important skills within this industry. If you can’t learn to work with others or figure out problems, then you have a problem, because. I have lost count of how many problems have actually came up whenever I had been working away on my assignments, and I all ways have to find someone with more knowledge than me or find the answer on the internet within tutorials or help files. but having great Teamwork skills is awesome because I can then find out the problems with ease, getting help from my classmates is easy, efficient, and most importantly, it is quick and effective. I find that in this coarse, time is a serious factor. I was supprised when they said it was only a year, and having to cram all this information into you’re brain in that time frame is quite a feat. it was actually funny when I came to the realization that the Design courses that I took back in high school for four years, that taught me about Digital Animation were summed up in this coarse in about a month. now that I am five months in now, I find it getting gradually easier with slight bumps of difficulty.
Overall, my time here at BCIT is all consuming, but I really do enjoy it. I enjoy spending countless hours working on what I love to do. sometimes I want to just take a break, who doesn’t? but when I really get into what I do, I am hard to stop. I try to maintain my sanity by getting out at least once a week, or to spend time with my friends. and I have to say that it really does help to take a break, I found that if I was stuck on a problem. if I took a break, to release the stress that this program creates, I find myself figuring out problems naturally, then begging to get back to what I was doing before I forget.
about now I find myself babbling on about my life here at BCIT, so I think I will call this at ends and post another update when the time comes.
